Rio de Janeiro champions could get stunned
Botafogo needed to fill striker Roger’s place, but they have not only brought in one but three new forwards in the form of Kieza, Cristian Palacios and Leandro Carvalho. In other news, Botafogo have some big absences for their league opener as Luiz Fernando and Matheus Fernandes have both been ruled out.
Palmeiras have no big news concerning their main options for the league opener line-up, but they were the biggest spenders in the transfer window. They have signed big names to improve their defence and midfield, with Marcos Rocha, Emerson Santos and Victor Luis arriving in defence, and Gustavo Scarpa and Lucas Lima joining their midfield. However, the club have sold centre back Yerry Mina to Barcelona.

Botafogo enjoyed a courageous turnaround in the 2018 Campeonato Carioca final against Vasco da Gama as they came back from a 3-2 home loss in the first leg to a 1-0 away win on the second leg, clinching the title on penalties. However, the well-earned trophy is not enough to make this side a really consistent one – Botafogo’s dependence on long crosses and set-pieces is notable – and they will need more than that to match one of this year’s title contenders, especially as they have lost their last two home games. They recorded a 2-1 win away at Audax Italiano in Chile in the first round of the Copa Sudamericana on Thursday.
Palmeiras lost the Campeonato Paulista title to their rivals Corinthians on penalties despite winning away 1-0 in the first leg and that was a big blow for the club. However, the defeat doesn’t change the fact that they are probably still the best team in the country in terms of squad depth and technical quality. The side registered a 1-1 draw at home against Boca Juniors in the first round of the Copa Sudamericana in midweek. They finished last season in second place on 63 points and had the sixth best away record.
Palmeiras are well organised and have plenty of attacking power to stun the Rio de Janeiro champions on Monday. I predict an away win.
Palmeiras have scored the first goal in seven of their last nine games – and all of those opening goals have been scored before half time. I expect them to be ahead at half time.
There have been four wins for Palmeiras and two for Botafogo in the last six encounters between these two.
