Kylian Mbappe: Possibly PSG's Last Shot at Champions League Trophy
Kylian Mbappe, one of the world's top footballers, has yet to help his home city club, Paris St-Germain (PSG), clinch the elusive Champions League trophy. During the 2024 Champions League Quarter-final on Tuesday, Mbappe showcased his skills by scoring twice as PSG outshone Barcelona on a 6-4 aggregate. The win secures PSG a spot in the semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund.
Rio Ferdinand, former Manchester United defender, praised Mbappe’s exceptional performance which included a precisely-taken penalty and a dogged second attempt rebound goal. Ferdinand suggests that it could be the right time for Mbappe to shine even brighter.
There are high expectations on Mbappe's shoulders, with many hoping for him to deliver PSG their long-awaited Champions League trophy. The 25-year-old striker still trails behind Cristiano Ronaldo's away-from-home knockout goals by 8 but has amassed 15 goals in just 12 games.
The current season will possibly be Mbappe's last chance to create Champions League history with PSG. Fueled by dreams of winning the competition with Paris, Mbappe is set to leave his hometown club for Spanish giant Real Madrid this summer. The planned move comes despite Mbappe's legendary output, contributing 41 goals in 42 games across all competitions, including eight in the Champions League.
PSG, under the ownership of Qatar Sports Investments, continue their pursuit of Europe's top trophy, regardless of the nine Ligue 1 titles the club has achieved since 2011. The Parisians reached the Champions League final in 2020, only to be defeated by Bayern Munich.
As the club approaches the final chapters of Mbappe’s journey with them, only two victories separate him from a dreamlike ending to his PSG career and securing the coveted prize of the Champions League.
