Borussia Dortmund Beats Atletico Madrid, Enters Champions League Semi-Finals After 11 Years
After an exciting match, Borussia Dortmund has secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 11 years. They achieved a splendid second-half comeback, winning 5-4 on aggregate against Atletico Madrid.
In the first half, Julian Brandt and Ian Maatsen, a Chelsea loanee, both scored from tight angles, bringing the score to 2-1 favoring Borussia Dortmund. Atletico Madrid soon evened the score on aggregate with a header from Mario Hermoso that deflected off Dortmund defender Mats Hummels. The game intensified as Angel Correa scored Atletico Madrid's fourth goal, but Dortmund equalized via a header from Niclas Fullkrug and concluded with Marcel Sabitzer's winning shot.
A match highlight was Ian Maatsen's goal, bringing Dortmund's aggregate lead to 3-2. Maatsen expressed his joy at his first Champions League goal and his performance overall. He signed an extension with parent club Chelsea before this season-long loan to Dortmund.
Player of the match, Marcel Sabitzer, came into limelight as he was instrumental in Dortmund's victory. The German club will now compete against Paris St-Germain in the semi-final.
Atletico Madrid had a heavy defeat for the first time since they lost to the Real Madrid in the 2014 final, which marks a seven-year gap since reaching the final four of Europe's top competition.
